WFMW - Gum

I learned the hard way that a preschooler cannot be trusted with A.B.C. gum left in her room overnight. It's not bad enough that I rarely buy the stuff but this was "special" gum. I wasn't allowed to throw it out, and sometimes at bed time I have to try REALLY hard to pick my battles wisely! So I caved. We stuck the gum to a plate and left it on a night stand, with explicit instructions to under NO circumstances was it to be touched until morning... Sure Mom, OK, I won't.

In the morning she was fussing because she was stuck to the sheet. So at some point she had disobeyed the direct order and not only chewed the gum again, but failed to put it in it's proper resting place. It must have fallen into the bed and "melted" into her PJ top & the fitted sheet.
Becoming permanent evidence that I should not have given THAT battle to the little one!

I scoured the met for tips on how to remove it, especially since the PJ top was almost new. It is in the freezer waiting for the results of my experiments on the sheet. I have heard of peanut butter working and freezing it and ice. But this was more of an embedded stain than something sitting on the fabric. I found my first tip - Vinegar. Plain old white vinegar, purchased at Aldi for a low 59 cents! I parked myself in the laundry room with the sheet & my bottle. I poured some onto the gum and began to rub it in. I realized quickly that some of it could have been picked off if it had been frozen first, but it was breaking it down rather effectively. After I had it all treated with the vinegar I tossed it in the washer. I only added a few other things, mostly because I didn't want gum on anything else, but I felt that it could use some agitation. I used my regular laundry soap and some fabric softener. I did set the machine for a heavy stain, that bumps the regular cycle to an hour and 5 minutes.

When I took the sheet out the gum was gone, all that is left is a faint stain. I am hoping that will come out over the next few washes.

New Energy Saver in the House...

Sigh... Doesn't it always seem to figure, as soon as you think you are at least caught up if not ahead a little when a bottle of laundry detergent falls into the washer & blows it to pieces (I had to leave the lid open because the trigger fell apart) this is the same part we had to have fixed a few months ago so there was no way I was spending another $100 on this 7 year old washer (that's 2/3rds the original price, pushing 3/4). We had Lowe's cards from Christmas, they were going to go to a couple of kitchen cupboards but I can't be with out a washer.

We got so LUCKY! Someone had returned a pair of GE front loaders the day before. We grabbed the washer at $200 off regular retail, bought the extended 5 warranty (cuz ya never know) & paid almost the same out of pocket as we did for the old one. Bonus: Energy costs on this washer are $10 with electric hot water at $0.086/KWH, our rates are about half that, so we'll see just how much this saves us. The old one was listed at $76 per year.

Laundry on my mind

I have been contemplating making the homemade laundry soap which uses
1/2 cup of 20 Mule Team Borax, 76 oz
1/2 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda, 55 oz
and 1/3of a grated bar of Fels-Naptha Laundry Bar Soap

I have my reservations about using it but I think that I will pick up the ingredients. My main reservation is that I love, no LOVE liquid laundry soap. I never had luck with powder, especially since I only use cold water.

Stop the Ride Stephanie made it for her Make it From Scratch Carnival, only she used Ivory soap.
Frugal Upstate Jenn offered it along with many other great laundry tips!

Right now I am using All Small & Mighty, Triple Concentrated Liquid Laundry Detergent, Free Clear, Case Pack, Nine - 32 Load Bottles (288 Loads). I bought it locally with a $1.50 off coupon. I really like the free & clear, because there is no smell to conflict with my new favorite fabric softeners, Snuggle Exhilarations, 3x Concentrate Fabric Softener, Melon & Lotus Flower, 32 Loads (Pack of 9) that I picked up on sale with a $1.50 off of 2 coupon. My laundry doesn't smell too girly either, but it doesn't exactly smell manly!!!

I found these recipes at Soaps Gone Buy

3 Pints Water
1/3 bar Fels Naptha Soap, grated
1/2 cup Washing Soda (Arm and Hammer, NOT baking soda though!!)
1/2 cup 20 Mule Team Borax
2 Gallon bucket to mix it in
1 Quart hot water
Hot Water
Mix Fels Naptha soap in a saucepan with 3 pints hot water and heat on low until dissolved. Stir in Washing Soda and Borax. Stir until thickened, and remove from heat. Add 1 Quart Hot Water to 2 gallon Bucket. Add soap mixture, and mix well. Fill bucket with hot water, and mix well. Set aside for 24 hours, or until mixture thickens. Use 1/2 cup of mixture per load. One batch makes 64 loads. Cost per load averages .02 per load.

Second Recipe:
1 cup grated Fels Naptha Soap
1/2 cup Washing Soda (Arm and Hammer again)
1/2 cup Borax (20 mule team Borax)
2 Tablespoons Glycerin
2 cups water
Mix first three ingredients together, than add glycerin and water. Use 1/2 to 3/4 cup per load. This one works best in cold or warm water.

Guess I'm saving my empty liquid bottles!!! Woohoo!

The Clothes Line...

There is nothing more frugal or green than hanging clothes out to dry, unless of course you beat them with a rock in the stream to wash them first (eww). I was recently made aware, that 35,000+ home owner's associations in CA have banned the back yard clothesline (Laundry List). ***Gasp*** On one hand I am shocked that CA has proven (again) that I want to live there less than I do in NY & how can a state that is currently considering legislation to ban the incandescent light bulb condone the banning of the most Green practice I know...

Ok, so you don't want to see you neighbors undies hanging outside, yuck, but what is wrong with sheets & blankets. Personally, I love to dry somethings outside. Jeans, undies & towels are a big no no. Towels especially, for some reason I have always had them get stiff & scratchy, not how a big fluffy towel should be!

It is a sign of spring here, when the quilts & sheets start dotting the landscape. The laundry line is a far more compelling sign than that of run over skunk (also a sign of Spring!)

You haven't lived until you've driven by an Amish house with the collection of blue & black strung all over. It's just a lovely sight.

5 minute finances #10- Buy some clothespins and a rope

I miss my clothes line & we will be rehanging it as soon as the weather is cooperative. I had one strung in the only possible place, between a tree & our garage. It was movable because it wasn't the most out oF the way location, so why it was pulled to the point of falling down I will never guess... I think they forgot it was there? The green rope was camouflaged against the yellow garage? As long as it gets rehung I really don't give a rip... :D.

Stop the Ride's wordless Wednesday photo is of her laundry out on the line...

The Grocery Store Excursion

I was at the grocery store today & realized just how cheap I am!!! My regular laundry soap was a whopping $5.69, I usually pay $4.something... Of course I try to have a coupon, but I didn't today. So I didn't buy it. With the difference in what I would have spent I bought a really off brand for $1.99. I know I will regret it, but the way I do laundry it won't last more than 2 weeks! I had to go the regular grocery store because I am making wontons for our family Christmas Sunday (extended family at least). I have already made the chocolate peanut butter balls, crinkle cookies, & baked crab rangoons. I still have to make the cheesecake dip & beef dip for my Mom. She works Saturday afternoons & doesn't have time to do all she wants to!

I did manage to get a few things done today for Christmas. I drew my Sister so I ordered her an itunes gift card from itunes . iTunes gift certificates

She has had her ipod for a while now & she bought her hubby one for his birthday, so music is a great gift & I get to pretend I was frugal because there was no shipping charge!!!

My kids are done with (I still need to pick up a bubble bath for dd & some candy for stockings). I am very thankful we aren't at ages where someone has to have the wii or ps3. They were easy this year, dd has been done for a while. I picked her main gift up over the summer on sale!!! Woohoo happy dance, of course she is 3 & will probably have as much fun with the box. She can turn anything into a parade & a song.
