I recently discovered Sephora & Clinique Superfit foundation. I made the mistake of using a free sample that came in a magazine. This foundation worked just the way it should. Even with the generic shade the coverage was perfect, made my skin tone even & felt wonderful. So, then I began browsing for the best deal... Because I don't like to spend a lot on makeup, but being 35 I'm getting to a point where I should be!

I found it at Sephora, through MyPoints. The foundation cost $20.50. I joined the beauty insider program at the website & was sent a promo code for free shipping on $25 order & if I shopped in either the 2 weeks before or after my birthday I would be sent a free Vanilla Cupcake Bath & Shower Bubbles. I am guessing that this is 2 separate promotions, I just happened to have them overlap!

Plus Sephora lets you chose 3 free samples with every purchase. I threw in a $5 package of foundation sponges and picked my 3 samples (3 designer fragrances). The total order cost $27 after tax, I received 2 points per dollar as well.

It may not be much but I just redeemed some points for a $10 Walmart card. It adds up quickly & I can honestly say that a bulk of my almost 40,000 points to date have been earned by just clicking through a few emails a day or answering an occasional survey.

We just took advantage of a New Year's Deal they ran to join Columbia house earning a total of 2000 points (so better than $10 gift card), plus I added 7 DVDs to our collection (after discounts & points less than $2.50 a movie). I will be cancelling it after we are fulfilled of course! I also purchased a few Christmas presents from QVC as well. I don't recommend using it just to earn points, but if you are already going to shop anyways, I've found it very rewarding!

My Favorite Local Wines for the Holidays (or anytime)

There is one thing that I throw my "cheap" hat out the window for and that is wine! Don't get me wrong, sometimes a $10 jug will do, but I'll splurge on local wines if I can! By splurge I still don't spend over $20 (in fact it's usually under $15). New York state has some fabulous wineries & I am unlucky lucky enough to have the Chautauqua Wine Trail in my back yard! Most of our wines are available in our local wine & liquor stores so I can get a variety in one stop. Of course it is nice to stop into the winery, especially if you want to try before you buy!

Sparkling Ponds makes a few I enjoy but our favorite is the "Woman Pleaser" the splash of cranberry is a nice touch, very drinkable.

Vetter Vineyards is a small rural winery with a big selection of nice wines.
Brig Niagara and the Concord are 2 of my favorites.

On a wine trail tour a few years ago we discovered Willow Creek Wines had a Merlot that I could drink. That is an accomplishment, since I don't care for the dry oak-y stuff.

One of our older wineries has an annual Strawberry Festival and they make a Strawberry Festival Wine that is tasty & fun! They also make my current favorite Bella Rosa, it's a very nice semi-sweet red.

With New York making it more winery friendly in recent years, we have had several new ones that I haven't had a chance to visit yet (like 5 or so!) We'll get there some time I'm sure, guess I'll have to drag my Mom out for a couple stops some Sunday afternoon!!!

Frugal Tip & Frugal Mom Reviews give away!

My best Frugal Tip, right now, is plan ahead! The more organized you can be the less running around you'll have to do later! That means keep track of what's in your cupboards, have a shopping list, consolidate your trips so you use less gas and are not tempted to spend so much money! This is especially helpful if you live far away from shopping areas. We are 15 miles from most of our grocery & drug stores. I have started only shopping on days I am also working, so we don't have to make a special trip. This is also saving wear & tear on my aging but paid for vehicle! LOL!

Super Savings - Walgreens today **Updated

**I missed the revlon nail polish deal, which is no biggie, I only wanted to get a couple newer colors. I have plenty to choose from already. My neighbor cleaned out her stash on me, her Mom is an Avon Rep, so I'm sure I only have a fraction of her stuff!!!

I did make it back to Walgreen's for a round 2 on the Robitussin deal. I used the $10 coupon from the first, a $10/$40 internet coupon, a $3/$10 in store (grand opening) coupon, the $10 gift card from my points and the "Half" coupon code for photos online. I ordered over 100 prints and paid under $10 for them. It was worth the trip.**

I like working close to CVS and Walgreens. I can pop in quickly on my way home so I don't have to plan a weeks trip!

Today I took advantage of the $3.99 Robitussin with the buy 3 get $10 Walgreen bucks at the register. A Call to Higher Places has a link to a $3/1 coupon. I was able to print 9. Since I work 3 days this week that's what I needed.

Back to School Shopping

I know some kids are already back to school, but here they make us wait another 2 WEEKS!

My shopping is almost all done. I can't say it's done, because we still need some zip-top bags and a new backpack (think I'm pulling the K & 1st grade one back out, that was still in good shape, 2nd grade bit the dust), but the basic supplies are all here!

The best part is, I didn't spend a fortune. I picked up a few things everytime I went shopping after they started filling shelves with it. Skipping over the glossy sparkly stuff (I only had to buy for the Prince, Princess doesn't need much if anything) I managed to get everything on his list for just under $8. Not bad for all that is there! The most expensive item was the glue sticks, from a MEGA pack, so I still have a bunch at home for me and the Princess to craft with! Between the practically free stuff I picked up at Walgreens, the cheap 5 cent notebooks at Wal-Mart I was able to pick up a few extras for me (like pens).

The biggest difference between 2nd & 3rd grade - matching notebooks & folders, he's a big boy now 3 subjects ~ tear, sigh~ and they had to be the same. Otherwise everything was similar, except he needs an old sock for a dry erase board. I'm ass-uming to learn cursive writing, but I could be wrong.

I felt like I had to save as much as possible on the supplies because clothing is outrageous! My boy is a husky, that usually means big bucks & good luck finding anything in a store (ok rural here remember, I'm an hour away from any mall)... Hopefully football will slim him down enough to avoid that challenge. At least he doesn't need a closet full of new things, that would be bank breaking!

I am also pretty sure that he has a bunch of pants he can still wear. He just needs some new shirts, for some reason my kids can stain things by looking at them! Towards the end of school last year he started wearing a t-shirt EVERYDAY, it was painful. Of course he'd wear jogging pants everyday if he could too, he really is his father's son LOL!

I am trying to get his wardrobe down to a manageable inventory, but the kids has more than I do. Hopefully I can get him down to

• 7 pairs of pants (jeans & khakis)
• 5 dress - polo shirts
• 14 t-shirts (he has at least 50 so this is a biggie, lawn sales, hand-me downs, grandparents)
• 5 PJ sets - 4 of these are on the list, he has outgrown all but 1 pair of feety jammies!
• 5 pair of jogging pants
• 5 Sweat shirts
• 2 Sweaters
• 1 All season jacket - also needs to be purchased, we like the kind with zip outs, they tend to last longer. The last one he had from
  

*Just so I qualify the chunky-ness of my son, he is about 54 inches tall (4feet 6inches) and will be going in the football program at 101 pounds. He has a belly, but he's mostly just a solid little guy. The coach apparently had to weigh him twice couldn't believe it.

I have discovered that we ALL need to up our cardio a little not just him...

Rebate Program - Frugal Tip #14

Caregivers Marketplace is a site I wish I knew about when I had diapers in the house. I use it now to get cash $ back on the flushable wipes and supplements I buy.

Their purpose is clear, to help ease the financial burden of care giving. The categories cover baby & juvenile diapers, bathing & skin care, dentures, dietary supplements, digestive health, home health care, incontinence care, mobility and independence, nutrition and pain relief. The amounts of the rebates may seem low, but when you combine them with a program like CVS Extra Care Bucks, you can see how somethings would be free, or even money back.

There is no limit on the number of forms you can submit, you send in a form every time you have purchased 5 or more eligible products, & send an original receipt. The clerk will gladly (or they should) print you multiple copies of your receipt, so you can combine, items & offers.

Walgreens #1 Super Savings

I made my first real trip to the new Walgreens (WAGS) Thursday. Since it's a new store I don't think they had gotten in everything in their flyer, which made me toss my list... I did get a rain check for the $1.99 domino sugar.
I left with 3 bags, mostly of school stuff. Can't beat a 10 pack of pens for 9 cents! The only thing I grabbed that wasn't on my list was 2 4 packs of dry erase markers for $1.99. The kids are LOVING the dry erase letter boards I got them, so much so the pens that came with them are drying out. Oh darn, the education... LOL!

I also took advantage of the Pert/Sure rebate that was in the coupon flyer this past weekend. Buy $5 worth of Pert & Sure & $5 of school supplies get $5 rebate by mail.

Household Budget

It's time to start analyzing our finances again. I have been avoiding this chore like I avoid weeding on a 90 degree day...

I started going through my receipts for the year so far. I entered all my 2nd quarter numbers into a spread sheet. My categories are Eat Out, Groceries/Household, Kids, Adults, House, Gas.


I am sure the gas and eating out numbers are off, hubby is terrible about keeping receipts. Spreadsheets like this are helpful to me because I can look and see that in May we were spending money 6 out of 14 days, 3 in a row, eek! I am pretty sure we were doing a project on the house, but still, we could have planned our trips a little better!

I am encouraged to see that we only spent $951.29 in the Grocery column. I included all household, toiletry and gift items in here as well. Most of the Kids purchases were baseball related.

I don't have any amounts for the bills we paid yet, that's step 2! Most of them are paid online, so it won't be hard to assemble that data. Then I can combine the numbers and paint a better picture to create a real budget, with a plan and everything!!! I am doing this now because I want to really cut the extras out, so I can start birthday and Christmas shopping.

What's your grocery budget?

So I am sitting here waiting for my vacuum to cool off, I'm trying to get the flour off the floor (hamster is still MIA, but I can't take the mess anymore). I picked up the August Woman's Day. Woohoo, cover says 184 Money saving ideas, right up my alley!

So I turn to the "Secrets of extreme grocery shoppers" article and dig in. I read the catchy first page and was hooked, so I turn to the second page and I am floored by the highlighted blurb. ~According to the USDA, the American family of four is now spending $10,933 a year on groceries - more than $911 a month.~ WHAT??? Where? WHo???

Even when hubby was working for the wholesale food restaurant distributor we weren't spending that on food a month. Maybe, half that, but we were buying more expensive meats. I don't know if we could eat that much in groceries a month.

Of course I kept reading, and found out I am an extreme shopper because I go to our local Aldi. Of course I do, the only thing they stock that I don't like or use is their brand of regular coffee. And that was fine until the last time we bought it there, tasted like grass. I could never remember to take it back, since their policy is double your money back, but I kept forgetting and hubby used it up. Their gourmet coffee has been just fine!

The best part is you don't really risk anything by trying their product because of their guarantee. It's not the easiest place to shop. You "rent" your cart for a quarter; bring your own bags, use boxes or buy theirs; and you bag everything. They usually only have a line or 2 open, so I try not to shop during busy times.

I usually buy store brands anyways, unless there is a sale & I have a coupon! The article says to think "outside the box" for things like milk. I know in our area the Aldi or Walmart have the best milk prices, unless someone is having a sale. The local gas station/convenient store if fine for emergencies, or if you ONLY need a couple things (gas is still $4.21 a gallon here and Aldi is 12 miles away). They chaged $3.89 the last time I bought milk there, Aldi was $2.79. So I save $1.10, easy enough!

I really like the "Grocery Share" idea, now I need to set up a group of people to do this with! The problem is I am the best shopper in my group! So basically the idea is you go to one store and buy the deals and the others in your group go to other stores and buy their deals; then meet up to exchange! The closest I've come to this was buying shampoo for my sister at CVS, it was a money maker after coupons and ECBs. She still thought I was a nut though...

I am also an extreme shopper because I match coupons to sales! The author even mentions Trent Hamm's (of The Simple Dollar) philosophy on waiting 4 weeks for sales after coupons are released. I've also found that there are usually good sales the same week coupons are released, especially at CVS.

Once a month cooking is mentioned. I personally use 30 Day Gourmet. They have a great planning software tool. I picked it up a couple years ago and use it regularly.

Make a menu and shop less frequently are also listed. I'd much rather shop once a week or every other. It cuts down on the impulse buying!

All in all I think I am a pretty extreme shopper. We hardly buy anything at "full price" or name brands. We garden to help out with the produce portion of our bill (I think we make out in the end, even with the expense of seeds, mulch, etc).

Oh yea, I'm probably extreme because I "Earned" the magazine subscription!!!

Street Science School Stuff

I must be on a back to school kick!

These came in the mail about a week (or so) ago. The Prince has been checking them out, LOVES THEM! There is more info at Street Science.



The camo composition notebook is cool! It's hard to believe they even make the old black and whites anymore, I'd had to have had this one!


The blue print one the 1 subject is of a turntable! It has a pocket for storage, very heavy cover and the coolest thing is there is a blurb about the cover on the inside!

Frugal Find

I really do dislike shopping at our local Wal*** Super Center, but in this current state of finances, driving all over town just isn't feasible. I did manage to find a great deal though (at least for here) I bought a 10 pound package of chicken quarters for $0.49 a pound. I should have bought 2. I'm going to toss a few in the crock pot later (maybe all depending on how they fit).

I plan on pulling some out for grilling & letting the rest cook. I can make a hundred things with cooked chicken on hand!

Why Cheap is not always Frugal

DH is upstairs on the other PC researching repair parts for his miter saw. Apparently the flat parts that are supposed to keep the blade straight are not very flat anymore (if they ever were). We haven't used it a ton for actual miters, mostly just straight cuts. But I noticed when he cut the trim for the bathroom the angles were "off".

I discovered that the tilt was set to below 0, Dh had only paid attention to the angle it's self. Apparently there are parts that are worn or bad that would have made this error less likely.

We knew this wasn't a top of the line power tool when we bought it but I did figure that it would make it through the "little" bit of trim work our house requires. And it makes me angry that after maybe 2 years of owning the tool & maybe having used it 20 times it needs repair.

Thankfully it seems the part is fairly common & we should be able to upgrade it when we replace it. How inexpensively I don't know yet.

GFS - I've been!

It's been a few weeks since we were there but it was a really cool place. I am hoping to get back before too long. My Mom bought more than I did, I really was only looking for bulk yeast (found it!). She bought some chicken salad that was better than any I've ever made, and I make pretty good food!

Just figured I'd share if anyone else has driven by & not gone in yet. Especially great if you are having a party. They seem to have all your catering needs, without the membership fee (which ROCKS). Next time I'm buying a can of hot fudge, it's the only thing I really miss about being out of the ice cream business...the 10 pound can of hot fudge!!!

Ok, so I was a little busy to post on Saturday what with the soccer game, dance practice, baseball practice & normal things like food & cleaning!

I had a $25 card plus I had earned a $5 card from the Hershey promotion around Valentine's Day.

I picked up some Flintstones vitamins for the kids buy one get one 50% off minus the $2 I had in coupons & luckily I was able to take advantage of the "Contour Glucose Monitor" deal. It was on sale for $14.99 with $14.99 extra care bucks. I found a coupon for up to $30 off so it worked out that they paid me $14.99 to take the thing home & I found there is a mail in rebate on my box... hmmm so if I send that in I'll have $30 minus the postage... not to shabby! I think I might have spent a couple dollars out of pocket, but I had to buy an ice pack for out baseball bag & some wet wipes for the bathroom that weren't on sale. Still not too shabby for a 15 minute shopping trip with only a little planning.

The funny thing was I ran into my Mom at the checkout & gave her my other Contour coupon so she got the $14.99 too. She may think I'm nuts but she's got $14.99 she didn't before!!!

Mother's Day is coming....

Retrevo has reviews of several cool electronic gadgets for under $50 and under $100.

I have to admit, if you haven't already realized it I am a gadget girl. I tend to be drawn more toward the kitchen gadgets than to personal electronics but I seriously have discovered a need for an MP3 player. They are awesome for walking! Thanks sis...

I really like the reviews of the digital key chains. I am not one of those awesome Mom's that always has pics of their kiddos at the ready. This handy electronic device would remedy that for me, I'll have pics where ever I have my keys!!!

I am not really a cell phone addict, but if I were a bluetooth headset would be cool. Our neighbor needs one, she is constantly trying to make calls from her car & having to pull over so she doesn't get a ticket.

The site also reviews some floating rose bath lights, that seem to be perfect for the real low end of the $ spectrum but high on the WOW factor!!! Who wouldn't find the multi colored floating wonders strangely fascinating.

The under $100 page has some seriously cool items that every Mom never knew she needed until she has one. Like the WiFi memory card, no more cords, that ROCKS!!!

OK, so hubby pay attention... any of these would be cool gifts for Mother's Day!

GFS - Anyone been?

I know where there is one, it's not terribly close but then most major stores aren't! I am just wondering how they compare to Sam's Club. I am trying to avoid buying a membership again!!! I don't have the business to justify it or use it as a deduction anymore but I don't know where else to buy the baking supplies I use at such good prices... You know 3 pounds of yeast & 25 pound bags of flour!

I haven't been into the GFS yet so I'm just wondering if anyone has???

I was also given some bacon wrapped Filets by our neighbor, they came for Angel Food Ministries. They were delicious, so I am most likely going to be purchasing their May packages!!!

So that's where it goes...

Ever wonder where your money goes in any given month? I pulled out reciepts for the month of January so far & realized because of all the runny noses here I have spent almost 2 hours worth of pay (before taxes) on tissues!!! At least I can say I spent very little out of pocket on all of the cold medicines thanks to CVS! We have been taking the immune builders, but we were all over exposed to something! My Mom even caught it!

I know that the warm/cold/warm/cold isn't supposed to increase our exposure to colds, but that is the only thing that was different! We had a stretch of warm weather then bam, snow. I think we just let our guard down when it's warm!

I was able to get one of the Nova Max deals, they paid me $40 to take it. The Garnier I bought was $5.99 regular price with $10 ECB & I had 2 $2 coupons, so they paid me $2 to take those. Plus the Ameal was free after ECB & I had a $3 coupon, so made $3 on that item too.

According to the receipts I saved $244.90 off retail. I don't know why I didn't start doing this sooner.

I wasn't happy with this CVS, the Charmin rang up wrong & I missed it, plus they took my MFG coupons out of the cost for the Shrek the third movie deal, so I had to go back & buy a tide for $5.44 & I picked up 2 packs of wrigley gum with my B1G1F coupon so #3 total was $6.88 after tax. I have plans for my ECB for next week, so I didn't use it. They also wouldn't let me use 2 coupons the b1g1free vitamin deal, technically I did buy two... Oh yea the candy was halloween leftovers & the kids got 2 treats because they were brave flu shot getters!

I wasn't able to get any glucose monitors, but my hope is to be able to pick up a couple next week. I was able to get 3 of the diabetes coupon books that everyone on the web is talking about, so I have coupons to pick up 3 monitors free after the coupon + $20 ECBs. That'll be $60 in ECBs, I am planning on donating the monitors, or giving them to my niece who is diabetic. I am going to see if my CVS closer to home has any monitors today, doubtful, but worth the try, if not I'll stop on my way to the Dr. on Monday!

I also have the $10 ECB for the Shrek movie, next week CVS has Campbells soup B1G1F, I hae a $1/10 coupon & the rebate form for $5 off the movie, so we'll be paying $4.99 for that, sweet!

I already started working on next weeks list. Dimetapp is back on sale $4.99, with buy 2 get $5 ECB. We have already used what I bought in October. Plus Tylenol is back with a spend $15 get $5 ECBs. I also think that the register coupon for the Dove skin Vitalizer is also in next weeks ad with ECBs ($12.49 - $5 CRT = $7.49 = $5 ECB). I found the flyer here.
